Butchart Staging System

Butchart staging system
The development of this system in 1976 by Dr. Eric Bouchard, has undergone more than 35 years on this system, they are still more ways that can be relied upon in the opinion of most surgical oncology in the United States, so as to accuracy and ease of measuring the progress of mesothelioma in the body , this system can also identify the location of the tumor in the patient's body.

Four stages in the Butchart staging system:
Stage 1:
The presence of a tumor within the pleura left or right, and can also involve the lung, pericardium, or diaphragm (the muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen) on the same side. It is the first stage of mesothelioma.
Stage 2:
At this stage, cancer has spread to the chest wall or in the esophagus (food passage connecting the throat to the stomach). May also be present on both sides of the chest and heart. Some patients who have cancer in the lymph nodes in the chest can take part.
Stage 3:
Occurs at this stage when the cancerous growth had penetrated the diaphragm (the membrane lining the abdominal cavity). And spread in the peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal cavity. Lymph nodes may be involved in both the chest and elsewhere.
Stage 4:
No evidence of distant metastases (spread through the bloodstream to other organs of the body distant from the point of origin).
Can be done to control any further spread of this disease and usually provides the patient with palliative treatments to keep as comfortable as possible.

Treatment options in the system Bouchard.
Be evaluated after the stage of the tumor and the overall health of the patient, is developing a plan to use conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, often in combination. New treatments include various new chemotherapy drugs, radiation therapy and intensity modulated (IMRT), interferon and interleukin therapies, gene therapy, immunotherapy, and others. The clinical trials testing new treatments be an option. In addition, many complementary and alternative medical (CAM) Treatments exist, including special diets, herbs and acupuncture, massage, vitamin therapy.
